What size air conditioner do I need?
The old rule is about 20 BTU per square foot, so 8,000 BTU covers roughly 350-400 sq ft. Sun-heavy rooms, kitchens and high ceilings push you up a size; shaded bedrooms can go down.
What is a U-shaped window AC?
Midea’s design splits the cabinet so the compressor sits outside the window sash: dramatically quieter indoors, the window still closes through the unit, and owner reports on sealing are strong.
Window or portable?
Windows win on every technical measure — less power per BTU and heat dumped straight outside. Portables exist for windows that cannot take a unit (casement, HOA rules); they cost more to run and need draining.
What is a through-the-wall air conditioner?
A sleeve-fit unit that slides into a wall opening, common in apartments and additions. If you are replacing one, match the sleeve dimensions and voltage (115V vs 230V) before looking at BTU.
