The best through-the-wall air conditioners
6 tested, 6 ranked · Last verified: Aug 31, 2026
LG's 11,200 BTU heat/cool through-the-wall unit is the best overall replacement — one appliance for summer and winter shoulders. Frigidaire's heat-capable 8,000 and 10,000 BTU sleeves cover smaller openings, and the 12,000 BTU Frigidaire at $299 is the budget slot.
Through-the-wall units are the apartment-and-addition specialty: they slide into a sleeve cut through the exterior wall, and almost nobody reviews them. Replacements are the most common purchase — so measure your sleeve width and check your voltage (115V or 230V) before anything else.

Best through-the-wall air conditioners: the full review
Replacing an old sleeve unit
Measure three things before ordering: the sleeve opening (standard is 26 inches wide but older installs vary), the circuit voltage (115V plugs vs 230V direct), and whether the old unit heated. Voltage is the one that strands returns — a 230V unit will not run on a 115V circuit, and adapters are not a thing.
Heat-capable models cost more but turn the same sleeve into a year-round appliance. In mild-winter regions they are the smarter replacement; in hard-winter ones the heat pump strip is a supplement, not a primary heat source.
Frequently asked questions
Will a window AC fit a wall sleeve?
Not safely — through-the-wall units are built for the heat load of a sealed sleeve and window units assume open-air exhaust. Match the sleeve with a TTW unit or a sleeve adapter kit from the same brand.
What does 230V mean for my order?
Larger through-the-wall units (typically 10,000-12,000+ BTU) run on 230V circuits with a different plug shape. Check the breaker and outlet before buying; sellers list voltage on the spec line.
