Ranges: every model we've tested, ranked
The range is the kitchen's workhorse and its most visible appliance. The 2026 field splits three ways: budget freestanding gas and electric from GE, Samsung and Frigidaire in the $500-800 tier; euro-flavored pro-style gas from Forno, THOR Kitchen and NXR in the $1,100-2,800 tier; and dual-fuel or induction flagships from ZLINE above that. We track live dealer pricing on all of them, because pro-style looks now start under $1,100.

Ranges FAQ
Gas, electric or dual fuel?
Gas cooktops give instant visual heat control and work through power outages; electric ovens hold steadier baking temperatures. Dual fuel (gas top, electric oven) is the best of both at a premium — induction ranges replace the gas top entirely with faster, cleaner electric heat.
What size range fits my kitchen?
Standard freestanding ranges are 30 inches wide; 24-inch compact units fit apartments and galley kitchens, and pro-style 36/48-inch models demand the room (and often a wider hood). Measure the cutout, the doorway path, and check whether your kitchen has a gas line.
Do pro-style ranges need professional installation?
Yes in practice — 36/48-inch units are heavy, gas hookup is licensed work, and high-BTU burners may need larger ducted hoods. Budget the installation alongside the appliance.
Are pro-style ranges worth it over budget models?
You are buying build quality (heavier grates, sealed high-BTU burners, bigger ovens) and looks. Cooking performance per dollar is better in the budget tier; pro-style is a long-ownership aesthetic and capability upgrade, not a faster dinner.
